Sajama

Early departure from the city of La Paz to Sajama National Park. Along the way, we will make several stops, the first at the famous Chullpares, ancient funerary towers made of mud, thatch, and stone built by pre-Hispanic cultures as burial and worship sites. There are several funerary towers in the area, generally quadrangular in shape. Inside, there is a vault where Chullpas (shrunken human remains) were once placed. These are the embodiment of the spirituality that existed in the early Aymara Lordships. The second stop will be in Curahuara de Carangas, where we will hike among giant rock formations. This town is also home to the so-called "Sistine Chapel of the Altiplano," a 17th-century colonial church famous for its murals and frescoes depicting biblical passages and scenes from Indigenous daily life. Considered a jewel of mestizo baroque art, it has been declared a National Monument. We then continue the journey to Sajama National Park, home to Bolivia's highest snow-capped mountain, at an altitude of 6,542 m. This snow-capped mountain requires mountain climbing, which requires good altitude acclimatization. It is also a protected area in the Bolivian Altiplano, known for being the first protected area in Bolivia. We will visit its spectacular geysers, sites of hydrothermal springs that periodically emit hot water and steam into the air, and the keñua forest—the tallest trees in the world at the highest altitudes. This forested area demonstrates the effort they have to survive in a very cold, desert-like environment. We will enjoy the hot springs in a unique natural setting to relax throughout the journey. Finally, we will return to La Paz at approximately 10:30 p.m.
